Shadowplay / Drain (Shadow Priest / Lock / Shaman) — TBC Arena 3s Guide

SustainDifficulty Season 2

Shadowplay is the definitive TBC attrition comp: a Shadow Priest and Affliction Warlock blanket all three enemies in DoTs while Mana Burn bleeds the healer white, and a Resto Shaman makes the trio nearly unkillable. You don't burst anyone down — you fear, drain, and rot until the enemy healer is out of mana and the whole team collapses at once.

Overview

The game plan is patient and suffocating. The Warlock keeps Corruption, Unstable Affliction, Curse of Agony, and Siphon Life rolling on multiple targets while the Priest layers Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch, then hammers the enemy healer with Mana Burn between Mind Blast and Mind Flay. Every dispel the healer casts is punished — Unstable Affliction silences on removal, and the sheer DoT volume means they can never fully clean it. Meanwhile the Shaman purges buffs, Earth Shocks casts, and drops totems that neutralize the enemy's own CC and burst attempts.

Win the mana war and the kill falls out for free. As the enemy healer dips toward empty, you tighten fear rotations across separate DR, collapse on a clothie or the healer, and let stacked DoTs plus a Shadow Word: Death finish the job. Bloodlust and trinkets turn that attrition edge into a hard kill window. The whole comp lives or dies on keeping the Shaman free — protect him and you simply cannot be outlasted.

Win condition

You win by attrition: keep full DoT coverage (Corruption, Unstable Affliction, Curse of Agony, Siphon Life from the Warlock; Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch from the Priest) rolling on the enemy healer and a secondary, while the Priest spams Mana Burn to strip the healer's pool faster than they can drink. Once the healer is near empty, chain-fear them out with Psychic Scream, Howl of Terror, and the Warlock's Fear on staggered DR, then dump on your kill target — usually the OOM healer or an exposed clothie — with Mind Blast, Shadow Word: Death, and detonating DoTs to close before anyone can top them.

Strengths

  • +Relentless spread DoT rot plus Mana Burn drains healers dry — almost nothing survives to dampening
  • +Triple-fear layering (Psychic Scream, Howl of Terror, Fear) locks a target out of the game on demand
  • +Resto shaman's Grounding, Tremor, and Nature's Swiftness make the team nearly impossible to burst or CC-kill

Weaknesses

  • A locked-down shaman folds fast — Counterspell + Silence chains on him crater your sustain
  • Low kill pressure into resilience-stacked healers; games that reach a coin-flip Bloodlust window can slip away

Cooldown timeline

Open by ramping DoTs and applying Curse of Tongues to the healer; drop Mana Tide Totem early to stay ahead in the mana race, and use Shadowfiend to refuel the Priest for sustained Mana Burn. Save the Warlock's Felhunter Spell Lock for the enemy's key heal or a mage's Polymorph, and hold PvP trinkets for the kill-window fear chain rather than the first CC. When the enemy healer is drained, pop Bloodlust plus Power Infusion on the Priest, land the fear layering, and burst — Nature's Swiftness + Healing Wave is your emergency reset if they try to swap onto the Shaman during your go.

Positioning

Play the pillars and stay spread so a single Shadowfury or AoE fear can't catch all three, and so your own fears land on different targets without overlapping DR. The Shaman sits at max range with line of sight on enemy casters for Earth Shock interrupts and Purge, but behind a pillar edge he can duck for Polymorph and Fear — keep Grounding Totem down for their burst/CC and Tremor Totem up against enemy fear comps. The Priest and Warlock kite melee freely; never let the team get stacked where the enemy can train the Shaman uninterrupted.

Vs. the meta

vs RMP (Rogue / Mage / Priest)Guide →

The Mage is the whole problem — Counterspell and shatter combos on your Shaman, Polymorph to reset, and burst that can global a clothie through your DoTs. Pre-drop Grounding Totem for Polymorph and the opener nuke, and keep the Shaman LoS behind a pillar so he can't be Counterspelled and sheeped at once. Spread hard so the Rogue can't cheap-shot into a shatter on the Priest. Trade fears aggressively onto the Mage and Priest to deny their setup, purge Ice Barrier, and grind the game long — RMP's mana and cooldowns run out before yours if you survive the first two burst attempts.

vs Shatterplay (Mage / Shadow Priest / Druid)Guide →

Their Mage provides the same shatter burst threat, and their Shadow Priest mirrors your Mana Burn, so the attrition edge you rely on shrinks. Protect the Shaman with Grounding and Tremor, keep everyone spread against Frost Nova + Shatter setups, and out-tempo their control by fear-chaining their Mage off casts. Purge is huge here — strip Ice Barrier and any Power Infusion. Race their healer's mana with your own Mana Burn while your Warlock's Unstable Affliction punishes every dispel; whoever's healer breaks first loses, so funnel Priest pressure onto their weaker-resilience support.

Gear requirements

  • Priest and Warlock stack Merciless Gladiator resilience with spell damage and the 3% spell hit needed for reliable DoTs/Mana Burn — Gladiator's spellblade/wand offhands for the extra spell power.
  • Shaman prioritizes resilience plus a deep mana pool and MP5 to win long attrition games, running Merciless Gladiator mail and a healing-weight one-hander/shield over raw spellpower.

Tips

  • Never dispel greedily on their DoTs mid-game — but on your offense, coordinate fears on separate DR (Psychic Scream, then Warlock Fear, then Howl of Terror) so the healer is locked out the entire kill window.
  • Keep the Warlock's Felhunter parked on the enemy healer for Spell Lock and Devour Magic; a single silenced heal often decides the mana race.
  • Shaman must Purge on cooldown — stripping Ice Barrier, PW:Shield, or Power Infusion removes far more effective health than a spot heal adds.
  • Watch enemy healer mana as your primary resource bar; don't force the kill until Mana Burn and drains have them near empty, then commit trinkets and Bloodlust together.
