Mage / Resto Druid — TBC Arena 2s Guide

ControlDifficulty Season 2

A pure control comp: the Frost Mage builds crowd-control chains while the Resto Druid HoTs through everything and drops Cyclones to fill the gaps. You don't out-damage anyone — you out-CC them, opening a window where the Water Elemental and a Nova'd target simply cannot be saved. Every game is a puzzle of Polymorph, Cyclone, and roots.

Overview

Mage/Druid wins by manufacturing a moment where the enemy healer is locked out and the kill target is frozen. The Druid's instant Lifebloom and Rejuvenation keep the Mage alive without ever standing still, which is what lets the pair kite indefinitely and reset any opener. Nothing about the comp is fast; it's a slow strangle where you trade CC until one clean chain lands.

The skill ceiling is high because every kill depends on stacking Polymorph, Frost Nova, Cyclone, and Counterspell in the right order against a moving enemy. Misfire one sheep and the whole setup collapses, but land the chain and the target dies through a healer who can't cast. Against melee you are dominant; against a second caster or a warlock's dots, the game turns into a grind you have to win with positioning.

Win condition

You win by locking the enemy healer out of a full healing rotation while the kill target is frozen and can't move. The core sequence: Polymorph the healer, Counterspell any attempt to trinket or cast, then Frost Nova the target and burn it with Water Elemental Freeze plus Frostbolt while your Druid Cyclones the second threat. Nature's Swiftness plus an instant Healing Touch covers any burst you take mid-chain. If the healer is a Druid or Paladin who trinkets the first sheep, re-sheep and reset — you have infinite mana relative to their dispel resources, so the second or third clean chain is the one that connects.

Strengths

  • +Relentless CC chains — Polymorph, Cyclone, Frost Nova, and roots let you fully lock a healer while the kill target dies
  • +Infinite kite: instant Druid HoTs mean the Mage never stops moving, resetting rogue and warrior openers with Blink and Nova
  • +Ice Block and Cold Snap give two hard resets, so a single bad trade rarely ends the game

Weaknesses

  • Almost no burst — if a CC chain misfires you cannot force a kill through a healthy healer
  • Warlock dots and fears shred your Polymorph/Cyclone chains and grind the Mage down through Ice Block

Cooldown timeline

Open by summoning the Water Elemental before the gates and pre-HoTing the Mage with Lifebloom and Rejuvenation. Save Icy Veins and the Elemental's Freeze for your committed kill window, not for chip damage. Cold Snap is your second Ice Block and second Frost Nova — bank it to break a stunlock or to double up Novas during a kill push. The Druid holds Barkskin for when a swap comes onto them, Innervate for the long grind against healer comps, and Nature's Swiftness as the emergency instant heal that saves the Mage through a rogue's burst. Trinkets come out for the fear or stun that would otherwise break your kill chain — never earlier.

Positioning

Live on a pillar. The Mage kites in wide arcs so no melee can free-cast on it, using the pillar to LoS the enemy healer's casts and to drop warlock dots and hunter shots. The Druid plays a slightly separate angle so a single charge or Intercept can't reach both of you, staying close enough to instant-heal but far enough that AoE fear or Cyclone can't catch the pair together. When you commit a kill, pull the target around the pillar so their healer loses line of sight at the exact moment you Nova and burst. Never let yourself get cornered — open space is your damage, and the pillar is your reset.

Vs. the meta

vs Rogue / Resto DruidGuide →

The Rogue trains your Mage from the opener and never leaves, and their Druid outheals your damage over a long game — so you must not play the long game. Blanket the opener with Ice Block, Blink out of Cheap Shot and Kidney windows, and Frost Nova plus Blink to peel the Rogue whenever he's on you. Your Druid Cyclones and roots the Rogue to buy Blinks and force cooldowns. Force your kill early: Polymorph the enemy Druid, Counterspell the heal, and burst the Rogue while he's rooted and out of cooldowns. If he Vanishes the sheep, reset on the pillar and try again before their Druid recovers mana.

vs Warlock / Resto DruidGuide →

Unstable Affliction and Curse of Exhaustion make this a grind — you can't dispel the dots and their fear shatters your CC chains. Play tight LoS to force the Warlock to recast dots and to eat his Fears against the pillar. Trinket the fear that would break your kill window, not a random one. Kill the Warlock, never the Druid: Polymorph the Druid, Counterspell the heal, then Nova the Warlock and commit Water Elemental Freeze plus Icy Veins. Keep the Mage topped with instant HoTs so the dot pressure never converts into a kill, and win the war of attrition by out-CCing their dispels.

Gear requirements

  • Mage: resilience first to survive the rogue/warrior train through Ice Block, then Merciless Gladiator's Spellblade with enough spell hit to never resist a Polymorph or Frostbolt, then spell damage and crit
  • Druid: resilience and stamina to survive hard swaps, then +healing and mp5 (Merciless Gladiator's Refuge) so you can win the long CC-grind games without running dry

Tips

  • Never sit in your own Frost Nova or an Entangling Root — shapeshift out of snares and roots for free with the Druid, and Blink out on the Mage
  • Stagger your CC: land Polymorph on the healer, then Cyclone the off-target so the two DR categories never overlap and both stay locked
  • Bank Cold Snap for a second Ice Block or a double Frost Nova during your kill push — it turns one CC window into two
  • Counterspell the heal, not the damage — locking the enemy healer's school for 8 seconds is what actually secures the kill
