Frost Mage PvP BiS — TBC Arena

PvP · ArenaSeason 221193024 ratingn=148Updated Jul 12, 2026

Frost Mage is TBC arena's puppet master: Water Elemental Freeze into Shatter, Ice Block to reset swaps, Cold Snap to do it twice. Every comp with a mage wants frost for the control, not the damage — which is exactly why the gear list is stamina and resilience first, damage second.

Usage percentages: share of surveyed Frost Mages equipping each item (n=148). Click a row to expand alternatives. Hover any item for its full tooltip.

Frost Mage stat priority (arena PvP)

  1. Resilience
  2. >Stamina
  3. >Spell Damage
  4. >Spell Penetration
  5. >Intellect

Frost is the control tree — Shatter combos provide the kill windows regardless of gear, so the list stacks survivability and spell penetration to make sure Frostbolts land through resistance while you outlast the other team's cooldowns.

Stat caps (arena)

StatCap
Resilience490 rating
Spell Hit (vs players)3 %
  • Resilience: No hard cap — ~350 is the 2v2 entry point, 490+ is competitive. Reduces crit chance, crit damage and DoT damage taken.
  • Spell Hit (vs players): Only 3% (~38 rating) is needed against players — they are your level, so the raid 16% cap does not apply. Talents/Misery can cover it.

What to buy first (arena)

  1. 1

    Main-hand + off-hand (spell power)

The single biggest jump in pressure or throughput per arena point. Buy your weapon before any armor slot.

  2. 2

PvP trinket (Medallion of the Horde/Alliance)

Non-negotiable. A CC-break trinket wins more games than any stat piece — grab it the moment you can.

  3. 3

Set shoulders, chest, legs (resilience core)

The high-resilience, high-armor slots. These three set the survivability floor that lets your team play the long game.

  4. 4

Rings, neck, cloak, bracers with resilience

Fill the off-slots with resilience pieces next; a raid piece here gets you globalled in dampening.

  5. 5

Gems & enchants (resilience + primary stat)

Do this last, tuned to your set. Cheap, high-impact, and easy to redo when you swap pieces.
