Frost Mage PvP Guide

Frost is the arena Mage spec and the game's premier kiting and control class. Permanent slows, Frost Nova, Blink and Ice Block let you dictate every engagement, while the Shatter combo — a guaranteed-crit Ice Lance + Frostbolt on a frozen target — deletes squishy players in a Polymorph window.

Overview

Against melee you win by never being touched; against casters you win with Polymorph, Counterspell and Mana Burn-style attrition alongside your partner. Ice Block is the best defensive in the game, wiping DoTs, Fear and burst on demand.

Strengths

  • +Unmatched kiting and control vs melee
  • +Shatter burst deletes targets in a freeze
  • +Ice Block + Blink give elite survivability

Weaknesses

  • Squishy if a Nova is trinketed and you're caught
  • Struggles into double-caster control (double Fear)

Stat priority & caps (arena)

Stat caps (arena)

StatCap
Resilience490 rating
Spell Hit (vs players)4 %
  • Resilience: No hard cap — ~350 is the 2v2 entry point, 490+ is competitive. Reduces crit chance, crit damage and DoT damage taken.
  • Spell Hit (vs players): 4% (~50 rating) caps spell misses against same-level players — the raid 16% boss cap does not apply. Hit talents and Misery can cover most of it, so gear little pure hit in arena.

Full gear with usage %, gems and enchants is on the Frost Mage PvP BiS list.

Recommended talent build

The Deep Frost build: Empowered Frostbolt, Ice Shards crit scaling and Summon Water Elemental, with Arcane efficiency talents up top. The consistency pick — one-button rotation, unmatched threat safety, and the same skeleton PvP frost builds start from.

Control & Shatter combo

  1. 1Polymorph the off-target (usually the enemy healer) to isolate the kill.
  2. 2Frostbolt the kill target to proc Frostbite, or hard-cast Frost Nova to root.
  3. 3Shatter combo on the frozen target: Ice Lance + Frostbolt (both guaranteed crits) + Icy Veins + trinket.
  4. 4Blink out of melee re-engages; Cone of Cold / Frost Nova to re-kite.
  5. 5Ice Block to reset Fear, DoTs, or a lost position, then re-Polymorph and go again.

Keep Frostbolt uptime on your target so Frostbite procs enable free Shatters. Manage Polymorph on the healer with clean DR, and hold Ice Block for the moment it saves the game rather than pressing it early. Distance is your armor — never stand still next to a melee.

Best professions (PvP)

Common mistakes

  • Blinking on cooldown instead of saving it for the melee re-engage.
  • Shattering without Icy Veins/trinket when you had a kill window.
  • Letting Polymorph DR reset by re-sheeping too early.
